Children must be protected. Children face a heightened risks of neglect, exploitation and abuse as they find themselves outside of education and their normal routines. Alternative pathways are also urgently for children to continue with their learning. Currently, the education of 1.5 billion students (87 per cent worldwide) has been disrupted by school closures to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission in communities. In Bangladesh about 41.89 million (50 per cent female) children are affected. We know from previous experiences, a. The longer children remain out of school the greater the risk they will not return and even on their return, chances of drop out increases, b. Adolescent girls and boys are at greatest risk of not returning to learning due to marriage and child labour, c. School closures put the poorest children at multiple educational and development risks as they are unlikely to have access to technologies for home-based learning and school-based services such as school meals.
